Great game

The game itself makes a lot of fun. But even it the game was a bit lame one has to admire the skills of one of the greatest game designer in history.

Brilliant game with a Monkey Island™ feel

I was a bit hesitant to purchase, as most new adventure games are lacking something compared to the legendary games of the 90s such as Monkey Island, Sam&Max, etc. The Cave, however, is absolutely spot on right from the start! This game is amazingly entertaining, has the humour we have come to expect from Ron Gilbert (with some references to the old MI games) and very clever think-outside-the-box puzzles. Although calling them simply "puzzles" is a bit unfair since theyre so much more immersive and entertaining than any of the "puzzles" in modern adventure games. THIS is how adventure is done! Best purchase of 2013 so far!

Excellent stories and Fantastic game play!

An excellent game! The graphics are beautiful to look at, the puzzles are puzzling and the stories are funny but sombre. The game play is very unique as you choose 3 characters to begin with then swap between them to solve puzzels. A great replay value with 7 different characters to choose from with different stories, skills and ablities.

Great game in the beginning buuuut...

The Cave is a great, great idea. Initially, you meet 7 characters (the Knight, Hillybilly, Adventurer, Monk, Time Traveler, Scientist and the Twins), all of which have different abilities that will serve you along your way. To start, you choose a team of 3 characters and make your way into the cave. The idea is that each character has a level unique to just them (the Knights Castle, the Hillbillys Carnival, the Adventurers Pyramid, the Twins Mansion, the Time Travelers Museum, the Scientists Silo and the Monks Temple) meaning, you should be able to play this game multiple times (with different characters) and not repeat levels. This isnt the case however. Inbetween each character specific level there are other levels (The Gift Shop, The Mine, The Zoo and The Island) that remain the same no matter which characters you choose. So although my first time through The Cave was fun and challenging, the second time through with my new characters was quite annoying and repetitive (since, in order to get to the character specifc levels of my new characters, I had to complete The Gift Shop, The Mine, The Zoo and The Island yet again). Im not sure Ill even bother playing out the rest of the game with the remaining characters as that would require so much repetition. Not only would I have to complete The Gift Shop, The Mine, The Zoo and The Island a 3rd time, but also, by the end Id have to use 2 characters that Id used previously, and only one new character which would mean Id have to complete 6 levels that Id previously done (twice already) just to get to the one character specific levle that I hadnt yet been to. Ugh, talk about a broken record. I wish there was a way of skipping the levels previously completed in order to get to the ones that I havent. In a nutshell, the 1st time around, I thought this games was fun, graphics were good, puzzles were challenging and The Cave itself (a talking cave) was quite amusing and creative. Buuuuut, I do believe wed get much more for our money if it wasnt so repetitive. I bought this while it was 50% off, so I suppose its okay that I only completed 50% of the game before getting annoyed. If I could, Id give this 2.5 stars (50% of 5 stars), but since I cant, Ill round up to 3 stars for entertainment it did provide :)

I rarely write reviews …

… but I had to for this game! Puzzles, graphics, story, humour - all great! This was the best $6.99 Ive spent in a long time!

Terrific game

This game is really fun to play. It has just the right combination of strategy and adventure. You can actually "kill" your characters (temporarily) so be careful. Graphics are great, but I play with the music off so I cant comment on that. There appears to be an App Store glitch with this game in that the store reports the game as always having an update when in fact there isnt one. Other than that its a terrific game.

A nice game!

The Cave is really interesting! Those 7 characters have nice stories and abilities. The graphics are beautiful, but the thing I hated the most is that the game is really short, once you have done it once. Now that you know all the puzzles, the only challenge is to try the new characters stories. Its a bit repetitive, but after all, I liked it and recommand it.

One of my favourites

One of my favourites. Almost perfect for my Mac, though the odd time I see a flicter for a fraction of a second here and there. Also, some of the puzzles were not as intuitive as could be. For example, at one part I had rolled a log (or was that a boulder) from a point, and figured I had to swap to different players at the same time. But if you didnt do it as expected, despite the object was moved, it would end up back and not register properly. So things like that will force you to always have to check the hint books and such. Otherwise it would be pretty much perfect.

Waste of $$

Looks like a great game- except at the start it crashed every second time I tired to play it… and now it freezes before it even gets to the load screen. Ive restarted my Mac, updated the software- but no change, and their support is only a web forum. Shame though- it looks cool from the bit I was able to play.

Perfect!

If youre a fan of DoubleFine or Ron Gilberts earlier games (Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts) youll love this game. But even if youve never heard of those youll find this game hilarious and fun. Its an offbeat journey into the darker side of its characters. Like a series of short stories around a theme, but you get to play a central role - with hilarious naration. Somehow they managed to solve the typical problem with adventure-like games (What do I do with the carrot in the carnival?) with a simple object system that still provides plenty of challenge. Anyway, a great balance between enjoying an animated short (or three, one for each character) and being part of it.

Great game!!!

I really enjoyed this game! Some people complained about the dark subject matter but it didnt bother me in the slightest! Each character in the game has their own story line with similar sub stories that have to be played no matter which characters you choose. This did not bother me and I enjoyed playing each character and learning their story and their secret past. The Cave is a game that I played over and over again. I felt I definitely got my moneys worth and I would recommend buying it!

Fond memories

Fans of the old school point and click adventures really need to check this game out. The price is insanely cheap for the amount of entertainment it provides. If you loved Monkey Island then the type of humor found here is going to be to your liking. The graphics are top notch and there is even replayability depending upon which character you choose in the beginning.

What a great adventure game!

I loved this game. There are seven characters from which to choose -- three of which go on your adventure at the same time. Each individual character has their own level to complete, so depending on which characters you take on your adventure, the layout of the game levels will change. My only complaint was that after I had experienced the game twice with 6 different characters, I didnt really want to have to reuse two of them, as I had already played through their levels and didnt really want to go through them again. I wish they had had designed 9 characters from the start. It would have been more interesting. Other than that, I found the game very amusing. I got stuck on a few levels, frustrated on a few others (The Monks lotus flower!!!), and even had a technical blip with the Adventurer, who seemed to get stuck a few times, but all in all it was well worth the money paid. Highly entertaining and very hard to turn off.

Great game, but some glitches/bugs

The Cave is a challenging and humorous puzzle game with serious undertones to the charaters’ stories. I would have given it five stars, but for the number of small glitches (e.g., getting the characters and/or objects stuck in one position and having to reload from the last save point), and the fact that the game is based around 3 characters per game and there are seven characters, forcing you to do a large amount of replay.

Fun, but short and not highly replyable

I picked up The Cave on sale for CDN$1.19 so I certainly can’t complain about value for money. The game is short, the puzzles are alternatively frustrating (there’s not even a clue that you’e supposed to switch views and switch characters at one point, so you’re basically just thrashing around,) the sense of humour is good and the graphics are great. Having finished it once, there’s not much incentive to run it again—the puzzles shift depending on the characters you choose, but the core remains the same. So, if you’re looking for cheap simple fun—great. If you’re looking for something truly puzzling, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. World Of Goo is more challenging, and has a higher replay factor (to use just one example.)

Yeah

What all the other guys said and more!

Fun game!

very unique gameplay. i really enjoy high scaled display and choosing different characters..!! nice!

FIX THE BUGS AND I

I love this game. Its funny, entertaining, challenging and beautiful to look at. Im on my second tour and I have to say that the developers missed quite a few bugs. Characters freeze or stop moving. Game locked up during the flying carpet scene when i accidentally made the monk jump against a wall as the rugs were rising. Tonight, I positioned the knight by the elevator to the princess castle. I had another character lower it and when I returned to the knight, he looked like his legs were cut off and he wouldnt move. Just flailed when I pressed the arrow keys. This wouldnt be so frustrating if the game didnt take such a long time to load every time you start. Finally, a suggestion: add a save progress option. Saving and exiting everytime you want to mark your place is ridiculous. ***UPDATE*** Changed my rating from 3 to 1. Time machine level is messed up. Sent one character to the past to move rolling boulder in half pipe to create the well in the present. However, the character that I teleport to the present travels to same location to find the boulder and NOT the well. This game is in need of a serious bug fix.

Love the Game, but huge problem here!

Id like to start out saying, The Cave is an amazing game! I love it, even though I havent yet played it all the way through. Its one of the best modern adventure games Ive played, a very original idea that holds immense replay value from what I can see. And its a beautiful and funny game! Now, for the reason I gave it two stars - it doesnt work on case-sensitive-formatted Macs! This is a huge oversight that needs to be addressed.. I had to get a new hard drive, and formatted it case-sensitive for several reasons, but The Cave wouldnt run unless I placed it in a case-insensitive sparse bundle image! The only reason I didnt give 1 star was because I really like the game, and honestly, as soon as this problems fixed, Ill bring my rating up to 5 stars, but for now, I cant give a good rating to a game that wont even run on all the systems its sold to...

Amazing!

This is one of the most well-designed games Ive ever played. Its refined and very befitting for a Mac. The graphics are outstanding, the puzzles are intriguing, and the humor is enlightening. It reminds me of the good old puzzle / platform / adventure games of the past with a modern twist. I played it on a 2008 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 and the game ran flawlessly from start to finish. Worth every penny. Thank you developers! The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer with more scenarios to solve. Hopefully there will be a Cave 2 soon!
